Direct and Indirect Objects
An introduction to Direct and Indirect Pronouns
In the English and French language there are different types of sentences and each simple sentence has three parts. The subject usually is either a noun or a pronoun, the verb can either be regular or irregular and then the object.
There are primarily two types of objects: the direct and indirect objects. A sentence with a direct object looks like this:
Subject + verb + object
Direct objects come after the verb and are a direct recipient of the action therein. For example Jane mange le pain. In this sentence, the object le pain is directly receiving the action of the verb mange.
A sentence with an indirect object looks like this:
Subject + verb + preposition + object
Indirect objects come after a preposition which comes after the verb. Thus the object is separated from the verb by a preposition. For example Jane va à la maison. The preposition à separated la maison from the verb va. This makes la maison an indirect object.
