French Present Tense
Tenses are a part of the structure of a sentence and they help in identifying the time an event took place. In French, we have the present tense conjugated in different ways for each of the personal pronouns. This present tense is called “Le présent de l’indicatif”.
It is used for the following:
- For actions presently happening or being carried out
Je mange (I am eating)
Note: “Le présent de l’indicatif” in French indicates both the present tense and the present continuous tense in English. Hence I eat and I am eating are represented the same way in French
- For habitual actions in the present or that started from the past but are still being done
Je mange à six heures tous les jours (I eat at six o’clock everyday)
Je regarded le depuis hier (I have been watching the film since yesterday)
- For actions that will take place in the immediate future e.g the next hour, tomorrow (demain), soon (bientôt)
Je mange bientôt (I will eat soon)
- To show progression in the present tense
Je mange et je lave les assiettes
