Learning French comes with its turns and twists. Although there is no one clear formula to distinguish a feminine word from a masculine word there is some information to note that is helpful in this regard. It is important to know the gender of a noun as every other form of a sentence depends on it such as the article it takes as well as the adjective that qualifies it.

A very helpful tip:

Sometimes, the endings of a word can help you determine its gender.

Words that end with the following are usually masculine:

Some examples are:

  • le journalisme
  • un fantasame
  • un encouragement
  • le courage
  • le tableau
  • un lecteur.
  • un festival
  • le telephone.

Some exceptions we have are la peau, la plage, une cage.

Words that end with the following are usually feminine:

Some examples are:

  • la beauté
  • la poubelle
  • une fourchette
  • la television
  • une finesse
  • l’impasse
  • la fleur
  • une pomade
  • une attitude
  • la science
  • une naissance

There are a few exceptions, there are le bonheur, le silence.
