Talking about positions in French

There are a number of prepositions to learn and to help you be able to learn them effectively, we have broken them down into more than one articles. Being overwhelmed is a sure way to “not” learn French language.

Après

In French, this is used to say “after”

Examples

Après le cours, je vais au café. (After the class, I am going to the café)

Anita mange des frites après le cours. (Anita eats Fries after class)

Avant

This is used to say “before”

Examples

Le cours de français est avant la pause. (The French lesson is before the break)

Il tape les documents avant dix heures. He types the documents before 10 o’clock.)

Avec

This means “with”

Examples

Vous voyagez avec Tony. (You are travelling with Tony)

Je ne cause pas avec mes camarades. (I don’t chat with my classmates)

Chez

This means “in, at, to the house of”. When using this preposition, you don’t need to add an extra preposition “à” to say “to, at or in”.

Examples

Tu vas chez Monique? (Are you going to Monique’s house?)

Je vais dormir chez mes parents. (I am going to sleep at my parent’s home)

It can also be used to talk about the office or shop of a person.

Examples

Je travaille chez le coiffeur. (I work at the barber’s shop)

Chez mon mecanicien, il y a deux bureaus. (At my mechanic’s, there are two offices)

Entre

This means “between”. When using it, you need the word “et” which means “and”

Example

Nous ouvrons entre dix heures et treize heures. (We open between 10 o’clock and 13 o’clock)

La montre est entre la boite et le portable. (The watch is between the box and the phone.

Sauf

This means “except”

Examples

Sauf à midi, je travaille pendant toute la journée. (Except at 12 noon, I work during the whole day.

Tout le monde arrivent à neuf heures sauf Jessica. (Everybody is arriving at 9 o’clock except Jessica)
